Biography:

Bernard Buffet was born in Paris in 1928. He joined the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 1943. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1947, also the date of his first solo exhibition. From 1956, he lived in Aix-en-Provence until 1964 when he bought a property in Brittany. Between 1965 and 1970, he shared his life between Paris and Brittany coast. In 1971, he was named knight in the Order of the Légion d’Honneur. In 1973, the Bernard Buffet Museum in Surugadaira (Japan) was inaugurated. This museum was extended in 1988. In 1974, he was elected a member of the Academy des Beaux-Arts of France. He settled in Normandy in 1980, then in Haut-Var in 1986 where he died in 1999. Many solo exhibitions were devoted to Bernard Buffet throughout his career. Already an international artist in his lifetime, he is still international since his death. His artworks can be admired in a lot of retrospectives, galleries and museum, all over the world. In France, we can quote for example, the Museum of Modern Art of Paris, the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Petit Palais – Fine Arts Museum of Paris, in the collections of the Centre national des arts plastiques, the Roger – Quilliot Art Museum of Clermont-Ferrand, the Museum of Modern Art of Troyes, the Museum of Fine Arts of Nantes, the Museum of Modern Art of Lille, the Museum of Fine Arts and Lace of Alençon, but also, the Parisian Gallery Maurice Garnier which is dedicated to his art. Morever, in the world, without being an exhausted list, the masterworks of the painter can be seen in Japan, in the Bernard Buffet Museum of Surugadaira, in the Modern Galleries of the Vatican, in the Tate Modern of London, in the Museum of Art of Basel, in the Museum of Modern Art of Frankfurt, in the National Museum of Armenia, in the United States, in the Museum of Modern Art of New-York, in the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden of Washington, D.C., in the Smart Museum of Art of the University of Chicago, in the Northewestern University Block Museum of Art, in the Cleveland Museum of Art, in the Harvard University Art Museum, but also, in the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco.
