Jean Besnard

Brown and Gold Enamelled Vase with Three Handles

Ceramic vase in an ovoid shape topped by a narrower neck set with three little handles. The whole piece is enamelled in brown tones enriched with a golden and amber spiral décor which emphasizes the soft curve of the piece.

Signed: “Jean Besnard France” in intaglio under the base.

Circa: 1925.

Dimensions:

Height: 7 ¼ in.

Diameter: 4 ½ in.

Remarks:

Besides his incised artworks, Jean Besnard also develops a decorative vocabulary centred on plain and full shapes brighten up with crackled golden powder. This aesthetic, laying on contrasts between dull and bright, perfectly fits the new Art Deco style.
