Émile Decœur

Ochre Hemispherical Bowl

A hemispherical bowl on a small heel in stoneware, with a thick ochre glaze shaded with milky white. The richness of the material here produces effects of white drips and dark ochre cracks due to the shrinkage of the upper layer of glaze, while the entire surface of the piece is covered with a network of very thin cracks.

Signed: in all letters underglaze.

Commentaire :

This vase is typical of Decœur’s work after the Great War, around 1920. At that time, his research focused on the richness of the material, whose thickness, the play of drips and cracks, and the nuances of colour took the place of decoration.
