Remarks:
This still life is very emblematic of the stylistic research André Derain leads during the 1930’s and stands out by its very close framing of the floral basket, giving the spectator the impression that they are about to burst out of the boundaries of the canvas. The painter made every effort to represent various species of flowers, including roses, crocuses, lupines or lily of the valley. Though Derain is not trying to offer a realistic representation, but rather to convey an impression of lushness through the overflowing, the profusion of flowers. The elements that are depicted are in fact more sketched that precisely drawn and defined. The colour rather than the drawing is what organises the composition. The vivid touch used by the artist in this piece gives it all its intensity, making this artwork truly vibrant.
