Brown and Turquoise Conic Vase

Conic shaped sandstone vase partly covered by crackled turquoise enamel on a first brown layer, creating geometric motives composed of vertical and horizontal stripes. With this decoration technique in reserve, the rough aspect of the clay contrasts with the enamel brightness of tone. The inside of the piece is also turquoise enamelled.
Signed: “Jean Besnard” in intaglio under the base.

Dimensions:
Height: 5 ¼ in.
Diameter: 5 ½ in.
Remarks:
From 1925, Besnard developed his decorative repertoire with friezes cut directly into the surface of unfired enamel pieces. His unique new style was often compared to African woven baskets. His palette ranged from powdery white to turquoise and more rarely included brown orange.
